Before summer ends, get yourself a pair of the sandal that SCREAMS summer - Salt Water sandals. I had these in white when I was a little girl. I also love them in red or tan. They're $39.99 at modcloth.com. They match with everything, and yes, you can even wear them in the water (including the ocean), and they won't get ruined. Love.

Havaianas
Photo: Nordstrom.com
Best flip-flop ever. The "Slim" flip-flop by Havaianas. I like this color, Light Golden, best because it's nude and matches with everything. Also, the color doesn't compete with your pedicure. $26 at Nordstrom.

J Crew Eyelet shirt dress
Photo: JCrew
Okay, I know my last post was a JCrew post, and I normally don't like to post about the same topic twice in a row. But I can't not tell you guys about this. This JCrew eyelet shirt dress is just amazing. But the most wonderful part is that's it's on sale right now, and there's an extra 50% off on all sale items at JCrew. So right now, this dress is $40. Someone, please buy this dress 'cause it' just too good to pass up. Comes in this kiwi color, white or navy blue. You're welcome!

Pom-poms. Yes-yes.
Photos: JCrew
JCrew keeps killing it with their summer 2014 collection. This just out - their embroidered pom-pom tank. Just screams summer! Comes in three different color combos but my favorite is this one in burnt crimson and royal blue. The details are amazing. $98.

Converse gets a dainty update
Photo: journeys.com
I love Converse sneakers. Especially the white ones. They're pretty much ageless and timeless.
But I've often thought that the soles were just ever-so-slightly chunky for my taste. Apparently, Converse has picked up on that thought and have come out with the "Dainty." The rubber sole is lower and just a bit more feminine. They come in a ton of colors, including this white crochet version which is insane!
Wear these with absolutely anything - jeans, shorts, dresses, skirts. Just perfect.

Poppytalk for Target
Photo: poppytalk
Poppytalk is one of my favorite lifestyle blogs. Poppytalk in particular always has the most beautiful, vintage-y, hand-made ideas.
Well, it seems that Target loves it too 'cause starting June 22, Poppytalk's party collection debuts at Target. Lots of really pretty things. My favorite is the foldable cloth checkerboard with cloth pieces. It'll sell out for sure.

Couldn't get to it fast enough
Photo: JCrew
I'm not crazy about jumpers for me, although I love them in general and on other people. However, this Regine Jumpsuit by Cardigan for J Crew really takes the cake. Simply THE perfect summer outfit. Would have worn it with white Birkenstocks, but I think the jumpsuit is already sold out. You might be able to track it down in a store.

Merona Mallory perforated drivers
Photo: target.com
Summer 2014 is all about perforated accessories. Better yet, WHITE perforated accessories. And Target is giving it to you for $24.99 with Merona's "Mallory" white perforated driver moc.
They're not available in stores so you have to get them on-line but they are soooo worth it. My friend has them so I saw them up close and personal. They are AMAZING. They are 100% man-made material but have a soft, outer suede-like finish. Perfect for work or weekend.
If you can only get one closed flat shoe this summer, this is it. They look great with jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses, whatever.

Rose-cut sleeping beauty turquoise
Photo: etsy
Sleeping Beauty turquoise is one of my favorite semi-precious minerals for jewelry. Love the color, love the name. Right now, Arizona is the most important producer of turquoise in the United States. One of the most important mines is the Sleeping Beauty mine in Globe, Arizona. It produces a special color and quality of turquoise, like the one pictured in this ring I found on etsy.
JanishJewels has amazing pieces for sale on etsy. This ring in particular is rose-cut sleeping beauty turquoise from the Sleeping Beauty mine. It's set in an 18k gold bezel on a sterling silver twig band. So beautiful and unique. Treat yourself!

Oakley "Warm Up" sunglasses
Photo: Oakley.com
If you're in need of sunglasses this summer and don't want to spend a fortune, you should check out Marshall's. I just got this great pair of women's Oakley "Warm Up" sunglasses for $32 on clearance!!! No, it's not a typo. These retail for $120.00. Got them in the tortoiseshell finish, which I love. They are super light-weight and have Polarized lenses which are great for minimizing glare.
Marshall's had a ton of other high-end brands like Coach and Kate Spade. If you don't see something you like at one location, check out another Marshall's because they don't always get the same products.

Happy Weekend
Photo: Bloomsbury.com
Looking for a book to read this summer? How about starting with this one - my next read and my book club's next read. My Salinger Year by Joanna Rakoff. Comes out June 3. Cannot wait. If you're a reader, this is a must.
My Salinger Year is a memoir about literary New York in the late 1990's, before the digital age. It's been described as a coming-of-age story about a talented writer and a testament to the universal power of books to shape our lives.
Charles Bock, New York Times best-selling author of Beautiful Children says, "This is an impossibly excellent read—a glowingly entertaining, miss-your-subway-stop engrossing, note-perfect piece of storytelling." Sold.

Gap 1969 button-front denim dress
Photo: gap.com
Must. Have. This. Dress. Gap's 1969 button-front denim dress for summer 2014. I'm pretty sure I had something similar when I was a kid in the '70's. If I were a dress, this is what I'd be.
Unfortunately, I checked Gap right now and it's sold out. I think it sold out in less than a day because Gap just put this dress on it's website yesterday. Incredible. I'm gonna cry.

Jason's Sea Fresh Toothpaste Gel
Photo: lookfantastic.com
This is my favorite organic toothpaste. Jason Natural Cosmetics' Sea Fresh toothpaste. It's actually a gel. You can get it at Whole Foods. I like the Deep Sea Spearmint one.
It has three natural whitening polishers: bamboo powder, calcium carbonate and silica which help prevent plaque build-up and are more gentle on your teeth than other whitening ingredients. Anti-bacterial grapefruit seed extract and perilla seed extract help block sugar acids and bacteria forming in your mouth. Certified organicaAloe vera gel helps soothe and relieve gums from irritation. Essential oil of mint gives it that Deep Spearmint flavor.
My favorite thing about this toothpaste: no fluoride, no sodium lauryl sulfate, no saccharin, no preservatives, and no animal testing. Try it; I think you'll really like it.

Coolest earrings
Photos: Dior
Dior T Shirt earrings. So darn cool. They come in different variations. The small pearl rests on the ear while the larger pearl peeps out from behind the earlobe. They can be worn alone or as a pair. They go with EVERYTHING. So classic, yet at the same time, fresh and modern and edgy. Timeless and ageless. I really like the all-pearl version seen here on Rihanna. Amazing.

Super yes, please
Photo: loefflerrandall
I always wear flats. Never heels. I feel fake in them and not myself. Even when I go out at night, I wear flats. These are perfect. The Lita Mignon sandal by Loeffler Randal, one of my favorite brands. I love the name . . . Lita Mignon. Just rolls off the tongue. Whoever named this shoe should be given a raise 'cause she (or he) nailed it.
The perfect color combo - black and nude; very Chanel. Would look good with shorts, with jeans, with a dress, with skirts; could wear it to work, to the movies, to lunch, and so on and so forth. You get the picture.
They're $295 so a bit steep. I'll just pin these to my pinterest "crazy good shoes" board and keep an eye on them in case they go on sale somewhere or turn up on ebay. You never know.

Happy weekend
Photo: gillettevenus.com
This is my favorite razor. The Venus Embrace Sensitive by Gillette. Been using it since it came out. It's designed for sensitive skin. Has that built-in moisture strip and five blades for a super smooth shave without nicks or cuts. Love the light ocean blue color - nice and serene. I read somewhere that it's the #1 razor used by female dermatologists.
There's always coupons for these in newspaper coupon inserts or online, so go ahead and check it out. Great for summer when you need to shave a lot.

Crochet Totes
Photo: toryburch.com
This is the bag I've been carrying for almost a year (probably should have switched it out in the fall and winter t2013 o something in leather, but really, here in Miami because of the temperature, I think crochet is fine all year long). Tory Burch's navy and emerald green crochet zip tote.
It's great because you can carry it on your shoulder, in the crook of your arm, or cross-body. Roomy inside with zippered pocked and 2 more open pockets. Received tons of compliments on this one because of the crochet pattern and colors.
This bag's no longer available, but crochet is super duper in so you should have no problem finding a really good one for summer. I'll probably carry this through September 2014, then retire it for a new leather bag. If I had to get another right now, I'd get the Valencia Straw Tote from Calypso St. Barth. $135 so not too bad, and they have a store right here in Coral Gables at the Village of Merrick Park.

Best white tee
Photo: gap.com
The best white tee, in my opinion, comes from Gap. Right now, Gap's favorite short-sleeve crew tee is $12.00. Come in a variety of colors, but for summer, white is the way to go.
They are long so they won't untuck and show your belly or your backside. They are fitted so you don't look frumpy. The sleeve length is just right, and they aren't tissue-thin so your stomach and belly-button won't show through. Crucial in your later years.
Oh, and did I mention they are currently $12? You need to buy more than one. White tees are meant to be replaced every year, if you wear them often. Don't skimp and try to wear the same white tee for longer, 'cause they just don't look crisp. You can recyle them - they make great cleaning rags.

Mailboxes
Photo: monsyb
Here's our mailbox. Been thinking about changing it out for a new one, but I haven't really found anything I like better. This one was originally from Restoration Hardware I believe (from many, many years ago). I like the fact that it's worn and faded and has black duct tape on the bottom to keep the bottom attached. Still serves its purpose so might just end up keeping it. If you're in the market for a new mailbox, check out Marshall's, TJMaxx, pinterest and etsy for unique ones.

Barney Butter
Photo: barneybutter.com
I love peanut butter and used to eat it almost every day. But I switched over to almond butter a few months ago, and this one is my favorite. Barney Butter's Crunchy almond butter (there's also the smooth version if you don't like crunchy). Give it a try. It's a little healthier than peanut butter, milder flavor, and just simply delicious. I especially like it on Carr's water cracker's with Whole Foods' strawberry conserve. Great mid-day snack with just the right amount of protein and sweetness.
Caveat: It's not cheap, and it's pricier than other almond butters. But trust me, it's the best-tasting one out there by far.

They're back
Photo: urbanoutfitters.com
Mules. Popular in the '90's but soooo much better now. I especially like these nude ones, the Druid Peep-Toe Mule, from Jeffrey Campbell available at Urban Outfitters for $155. So many options with these.
But a few rules. They look best with my favorite type of skirt - an A-line knee-length style or midi skirt. NEVER wear them with a mini-skirt or mini-dress or shorts. And if you're going to wear them with jeans, boyfriend style or cropped jeans look best. Forget skinny jeans with these. Also stacked heel styles like these or wedges are the most modern - skip the stiletto heel.

My newest find that I'm using and really like. Oil of Olay Beauty Balm cream. If you want to get ready quick in the morning, this is for you. Extremely lightweight. Has sunscreen, evens out skin tone, moisturizes. Doesn't go on orange-y (I bought the light to medium skin color). Oil-free and PABA-free. $11.99 at drugstore.com.

Happy Weekend
Photo: fcit.usf.edu
Been living in Miami for over 44 years and had never been to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden on Old Cutler. I went last weekend with my husband and loved it.
Weather permitting, on Saturday mornings there's a farmers market on the premises. Highly recommend the 45-minute tram tour that's included in the entry fee. Our guide was super informative. Also, the Wings of the Tropics Butterfly Conservatory is pretty impressive. Check it out if you've never been - worth the trip.

J Crew Arrow-print shift dress
Photo: J. Crew
J. Crew's May 2014 collection is out, and I LOVE the Arrow-print shift dress in this flax color (also comes in neon green). The print basically acts like a solid so you can wear it anywhere, anytime. Love the blue detailing at the neck and arm holes. Love that it's a shift so it's non-constricting. Good on Mondays when you're feeling a little bloated or fat from the weekend.
I would wear this to work with little flats and then on the weekends I'd wear it with flat leather flips or sandals. $98 so not to shabby, especially for something I'd probably wear at least once/week. It'll probably go on sale at some point in the next few weeks, but if you really want it, get it now cause the most popular sizes will sell out quickly.

Serena & Lily rolling storage crate
Photo: serenaandlily.com
Love this great rolling cart from Serena and Lily. Use as a rolling book cart, toy bin or storage for pretty much anything else. Each crate is detailed with one of four stencils: Soft Drinks, Lemonade, Super Seven or White Star. Love the bright orange casters.
These come in 2 sizes: small for $88 and large for $118. However, I'm pretty sure you can make one of these using any box you want and buying for casters from Home Depot or Lowe's. Leave plain or stencil something on it. Nice little weekend project.

MTV muscle tank
Photo: ae.com
No, don't worry, I'm not going to wear this. But I love it. I was there for MTV's first video ever, in August 1981. Yup. So I have a lot of love for anything vintage-y MTV.
It's supposed to look like something you pulled out of the lost and found bin at school! So clever.
It's on sale now for $14.99. Get it for your daughter, your niece, any female you know under 20. It's just too cool to pass up. I even think it would look good framed and hanging on your wall. I want my MTV!!!!

L'Oreal eye makeup remover
Photo: drugstore.com
This is my all-time favorite eye makeup remover, L'Oreal Paris Skin Expertise Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover. I think I've been using it for at least 15 years. You can take off eye makeup while you have your contacts on and you won't feel a thing, that's how gentle it is.
The only thing is, I've been on an organic beauty product/skin product roll for almost a year now so I'd like to replace this with something that has less chemicals. We'll see. I'm in no rush because I've tried quite a few eye makeup removers, high-end to low-end, and nothing comes close to this one.
Available at drugstore.com for $7, but you can usually find it at Target or Walgreens. Although it is often sold out so if you find it, stock up and buy a few.

Frederica espadrille & Shopbop sale
Photo: Shopbop
Shopbop, one of my favorite on-line clothing sites, is having a 25% off everything (including sale items) friends and family sale. But it ends tonight at midnight!
One of my favorite finds on the site: the Frederica espadrille by Schutz. $130, so it's a little steep for an espadrille, I think, but with the 25% off and free shipping and no tax, it becomes a little more palatable, right?
These go with everything: jeans, shorts, skirts, a dress, you name it. Only sizes 7, 8 and 10 left, so get to it!

Sustainable fashion
Photo: amazon
I love fashion. I love reading about its history, about designers and how they started, where they get their inspiration. I love reading blogs about street fashion and how technology has changed the way fashion is so accessible to all of us now.
What I haven't sought out is the story behind the clothes we so casually buy and wear and the not-so-pleasant story of how fashion arrives to us so quickly. That's why the next book I want to read is Lucy Siegle's "To Die For: Is Fashion Wearing Out the World?" Siegle writes about the human and environmental cost of fashion. She answers questions like how a $20 dress at H&M got to be that cheap, why is cashmere everywhere now, what it's like to work in a garment factory in India.
I heard about the book after reading a wonderful article on Livia Firth (Colin's wife), known as the queen of sustainable fashion, in London's Telegraph newspaper. Her company, Eco-Age, is a consulting business for companies trying to manage "ethics with aesthetics." Firth also uses her celebrity profile to promote sustainable fashion and has come up with the GCC - the Green Carpet Challenge. For example, at the 2010 Golden Globes in 2010, Firth showed up in a repurposed Christiana Couture wedding dress. For the Paris premiere of The King's Speech in January 2011, she wore an outfit made from one of Colin's old suits.
Livia Firth tries to follow a 30-wear rule, which she says was suggested by Siegle in her book. If you can commit to wearing something 30 times, it's a huge move in the right direction. I guess it'll make you think next time you go to Target or Zara or wherever you shop. I know I have a lot of items in my closet I've worn at least 30 times. But I also know there's a few things in there that don't come close to being worn 30 times. I'm pretty good at weeding a piece of clothing out that I haven't worn in a long time, but I know I usually get rid of it before I've worn it 30 times, which is a problem.
I like that 30-wear rule. Gonna work on it.

IKEA coming to Miami
Photo:IKEA
I'm sure you all know by now that IKEA is soon to open here in Miami, right next to Dolphin Mall this summer. Now you won't have to schlep over to Sawgrass when you need to get something like the Variera plastic bag dispenser. I bought it a few years ago, when IKEA first opened up in Sawgrass. Wonderful for storing plastic bags. $1.99 so you have nothing to lose. At that price, might as well get a few of them.
If you have time to burn, got on your pinterest and search "variera ikea plastic" to see other ingenious ways you can use it around your house.

Blue Lizard Australian sunscreen
Photo: bluelizard
Summer weather is pretty much here. This is one of my favorite sunscreens, hands down. One of the pediatric dermatologists at the University of Miami recommended it to me for my girls. Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen contains 5% titanium dioxide and 10% zinc oxide, making it a broad-spectrum formula that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. It has an SPF 30, which means that it provides 98% protection. This non-toxic sunscreen is safe enough for sensitive skin and young children. It's not greasy, won't irritate your skin or eyes, non-comedogenic so you won't break out, hypoallergenic, does not contain artificial colors, and is fragrance-free.
The bottle turns blue when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, so it reminds you about UV exposure and to reapply the sunscreen. It's not cheap, but it's not the most expensive sunscreen out there, either. Blue Lizard is not sold in grocery stores, but you can find it at bluelizard.net, drugstore.com, amazon.com, and walgreens.com.

Happy weekend
Photo: monsyb
This is one of my favorite summer totes. I bought it last year at Target. Love the colored raffia pom-poms and faux bamboo handle. I think I paid $19.99 for this one. Target has some surprisingly unique, well-made pieces for spring and summer that come out around now, if you're looking for a summer look like this.
For something made out of raffia or other similar material like it, it's not worth it to spend a lot of money. Although if you take care of the bag and don't get it wet (get a different one for the beach), you can get at few summers out of it, for sure.
There are so many places you can get the look and pay very little. Check out Target, Marshalls, TJMaxx, Anthropologie sales, Nordstrom sales and ebay. I like this on weekends with a white t-shirt, dark denim tailored shorts and any kind of flip-flops.

Happy weekend
Photo: amazon
I have a great love for all things 1960's and 1970's. Here's a book I've been wanting to get for a while, Leroy Grannis' Surf Photography of the 1960's and 1970's. Beautiful pictures taken by Grannis, a surfer himself, of surf life in California and Hawaii during those years.
Before there was the GoPro camera, Grannis suction-cupped a waterproof box to his board, allowing him to change film in the water and stay closer to the surfing action than other photographers of the time. And even more amazing, Grannis didn't pick up a camera until he was 42, when he made a career out of photography. Just goes to show you, it's never too late.
This unlimited popular edition can be found on amazon for $89.99. But the original limited Collector's Edition (there were only 1,000 of them) sold by Taschen, the art book publisher, sold out in record time. There's one on ebay right now, signed by Grannis himself, with a buy it now of $650 or you can make an offer. Cowabunga!

Saltwater sandals
Photo: saltwatersandals.com
Saltwater sandals are some of the comfiest sandals you will ever wear. They scream SUMMER!! Did any of you have these when you were little? I did. In white. They bring back a lot of memories
The Hoy Shoe Company in Missouri has been making these for over 60 years. They look exactly the same as they did when I had them in the 1970's. Except now, they come in some great new colors. I really like this patent yellow leather version. $42.95 on zappos.com. Saltwaters are super trendy right now, but they've never really gone out of style, nor will they ever.

DIY African Juju hat
Photo: thenester.com
LOVE this African Juju hat pictured on the wall in this room. Juju hats have been appearing in the décor world for years now. Saw it all the time in Domino magazine before its demise. I'd love to have one in hot pink or creamy white, although I really like this yellow one (yellow doesn't mix in with my look, but this one is very, very tempting). The bad news is they run about $400, and I don't really wanna pay that much for feathers, you know?
The good news is that the DIY world via pinterest, etc. has gotten a hold of the Juju hat and run with it. So, if you're slightly crafty, you can buy the materials and make one yourself. I particularly like this one from the blog," ...Love Maegan":
Photo: ...lovemaegan
There's also instructions from Lisa Quinn on the LiveWell network's website for another beautiful one.
I'm the un-craftiest person on the planet, but my mom and sister are SUPER crafty. Maybe I can convince them to whip one of these up for me if I buy them the supplies and throw in a manicure/pedicure from my manicurist, Ines. Gonna work on it.

Why reading fiction matters
Photo: amazon
I love to read. Always have. For so many reason, too many to number. Fiction, non-fiction, anything.
Well, lo and behold, there appear to be lots of other reasons why reading fiction, in particular, is beneficial. A recent study suggests that people who read fiction are better able to understand the emotions of others. NPR had a story last week on the topic of the social and personal benefits of reading fiction. Check it out here.
On that note, I'd like to recommend one of my personal favorites, the 2001 novella, Shopgirl, by Steve Martin (yes, Steve Martin the actor/comedian). It's not too long so you can get through it quickly. Charming, moving, smart. I think you'll really like it. The 2005 movie, starring Martin, Claire Danes and Jason Schwartzman is a quiet, touching film. A surprisingly well-done adaptation of the book. Hope you like them.

Buddha for your home, garden, office
Photo: monsyb
This is one of my favorite meditating Buddha statues. This one's in our backyard on a wooden table with a beautiful bougainvillea that's growing over it. Got it a few years ago at Target. And now that it's a little older and weathered, it looks even better.
I have a couple more Buddha heads/statues in our home and one on my office desk. It's nice to have a Buddha in your home, garden or office. Particularly the meditating Buddha, because it represents the hope for peace and harmony of the homeowners or the office occupant. Very relaxing to look at.
You don't have to be a Buddhist to have one and they're everywhere now because they're pretty popular in the home/garden décor world, so I'm sure you can find one you really like. Try Target, TJMaxx, Homegoods, ebay, etsy, garden stores, etc.

All photos: Target
Mossimo Supply Co. for Target. Boho printed crossbody bag. Adjustable strap. Zip closure top, zip pocket inside and open pocket inside for cell phone. The perfect weekend crossbody bag. Also makes a great present.
Love the black and white print design on the strap. Really love the little pom-pom tassels, but if tassels aren't your thing, you can take them off. A great way to add a little zing to your spring/summer outfits for just $19.99. This one won't last long, if you can still find it.

Gloss Bar Miami
Photo: glossmiami
Okay, let me preface this by saying I have the best manicurist in Miami, Ines Garcia. Been doing manicures/pedicures with her for over 20 years. I've tried everything else in Miami when she goes on vacation and nothing else compares.
Having said that, I'm very intrigued by this new place, Gloss Bar Miami, in Coral Gables on Andalusia Avenue. The first organic natural nail salon in Miami - hallelujah!! Thank you, organic gods. I'd say it's about time for this to get to Miami.
Gloss nail polishes are chemical-free, and Sandra Weir, the owner, offers over 100 colors. Even the nail polish remover is 100% organic so it doesn't burn the inside lining of your nose. I haven't been yet so I can't review it but from what I've read in the press and checking out the website and the pictures, I think it's right up my alley.
Most of you know I don't paint my nails for health reasons (still haven't been able to give up painted toes, though), but I just might get them painted so I can try Gloss Bar out. And it doesn't hurt that it's next door to Chocolate Fashion, best French pastries in Miami, so you can get a real French croissant or raspberry butterfly and a café au lait then go get your nails/feet done. Heaven.

Starbucks Protein Bistro Box - perfecto
Photo: cookinglight
This is so perfect for a light lunch or when you're on the go. Yeah, you can for sure make it yourself at home but when you can't, Starbucks Protein Bistro Box is better than opting for fast food. It comes with a cage-free hard boiled egg (I know you organic, granola people like me love this), white cheddar cheese slices, multigrain muesli bread, honey peanut butter, apple slices and a bunch of red grapes.
And if you wanna be really green, save their little plastic container and when you make your own protein combo at home, just use this one to store it in. Great to pack for kids that do sports after school and need a quick, healthy snack when they're riding around in the car.
